The city of Milwaukee is the largest in the state and is located on the western shores of beautiful Lake Michigan, where the Menomonee, Kinnickinnic, and Milwaukee rivers converge. A centerpiece of the lakefront is the $100 million expansion of the Milwaukee Art Museum, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. This is the first building in the country to be completed by Calatrava and it has received many awards and national recognition, including being named “Best Design of 2001” by Time Magazine. The museum was named one of the “top 12 must-visit new buildings” by Arthur Frommer’s Budget Traveler in 2004 and it was named “New American Beauty” by People magazine in 2003.
Milwaukee is appealing to experienced professionals and families, as well as recent college graduates due to its diverse population, relatively low cost of living, growing job market, cleanliness, and substantial college population. The region experiences a full range of seasons, with temperatures averaging 82 degrees in July and 27 degrees in January. One of the many advantages of the proximity to Lake Michigan is the “lake effect” climate, which causes the weather to be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer months.
The city is sometimes called the “City of Festivals” because of the diverse array of ethnic, cultural and musical festivals that take place throughout the year. Examples include the Asian Moon Festival, Polish Fest, Lakefront Festival of Arts, Bavarian VolksFest, African World Festival, Irish Fest, German Fest, Arab World Fest, Bastille Days, Mexican Fiesta, and Summerfest - which is the world’s largest music festival according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Sports enthusiasts will also find plenty to cheer for, with four professional sports teams, ranging from baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers to hockey with the Milwaukee Admirals. And, the January 2006 edition of Men’s Fitness magazine listed Milwuakee as the 5th “fittest” city in the U.S., citing exercise, sports participation, recreation facilities, and health care among Milwaukee’s strengths.
Please note that Milwaukee Teaching Fellows will need to become full residents of the city of Milwaukee within one year of beginning employment with the district. Milwaukee Public Schools has a strict requirement that all district teachers must live in the city limits. Teaching Fellows have the opportunity to become a part of the Milwaukee community – or to strengthen the roots they may already have – by entering a career that directly impacts the future of their city.
